The Cinder Path trail was Iowa’s first rail trail; a recreational trail that was converted from a railway bed. While you’ll want to take care using this trail due to the sometimes rough cinder and limestone surface, this trail shouldn’t be missed when exploring Iowa by bicycle. The beautiful Chariton River Valley features wildflowers, native timber, prairie land and plenty of wildlife. Chariton anchors one end of the trail, which winds through the small agricultural community of Derby and ends in Humeston.
