The Trout Run Trail, an 11 mile loop trail around Decorah, Iowa, is one of the most fun recreational trails you’ll experience in Iowa and part of the reason is Decorah itself. Nestled among rolling hills in the beautiful Oneota Valley. The downtown is great to explore, with plenty of shops and restaurants and the wonderful, historic Hotel Winneshiek. Within walking distance from the downtown are two fantastic breweries, Toppling Goliath and Pulpit Rock. If we had to choose a favorite, it would be Pulpit Rock for their laid-back vibe that’s all about beer and socializing. A perfect treat after a day of cycling.
Fully paved, the Trout Run Trail features a few hills to keep things interesting as well as some city riding. The trail is named after the Decorah Fish Hatchery, which is a state-of-the-art trout farming operation that rears almost 150,000 trout annually and is located right on the trail. The facility that is open for the public to tour daily and has restroom and fresh water facilities as well as picnic shelters and grounds.
The world famous Decorah Eagles live not too far away from the fish hatchery and the trail passes right under the main nest, which is six feet in diameter and weighs 750 pounds. These majestic birds are viewed by hundreds of thousands of people online as they nest and raise their young each year in Decorah.
For the city amenities, the scenery, the trail itself and the interesting sights along the way, we rate the Trout Run Trail among the best in Iowa.
